Civil Aviation Medicine
Foreword
This edition of the Technical Mini Series on ‘Civil Aviation Medicine’ is the third in the series after ‘Aviation Pathology’ and ‘Flying Clothing’. This could not have come at a more opportune time. Our country is on the threshold of a revolution in civil aviation. The boom in civil aviation can be gauged by the fact that in one year, the number of people seeking pilot licenses has multiplied many times. To cater to the ever – increasing number of passengers and cargo, Indian Carriers will press into service new aircraft at a fast pace.
This growth presents both challenges and opportunities for everyone involved with aviation. On the aeromedical front, this growth presents c challenges in terms of medical certification of pilots. Shift work, jet lag, circadian dysrhythmia, aircrew fatigue, human factors in aviation safety, airline hygiene and sanitation are just some of the issues that will need to be addressed. There is no doubt that this growth will provide numerous opportunities for aerospace medicine specialists to rise to the occasion in providing the necessary support to ensure safety both on the ground and in the sky. The series will provide much needed comprehensive knowledge of this subject, which is essential for our doctors.
