Aerospace Medicine Aviation Accident Pathology Chief Patron Contributed by Air Commodore U B Mathur VSM
MBBS, MD (Pathology), DCP Published By: Indian Society of Aerospace Medicine Foreword Aerospace Medicine is a fledgling specialty, barely eight decades old. It is basically occupational in nature and more preventive in its approach to the varied stresses of flight. In India, Aerospace Medicine surfaced in the early fifties as a small cell to aid the nascent aircraft industry. In 1957, the School of Aviation Medicine, IAF was founded. This subsequently gave rise to the Institute of Aviation Medicine, which was recognized for its expertise and teaching of the subject of Aviation Medicine. In the eighties this IAF unit entered the field of Space Medicine. After active collaboration with the erstwhile USSR and NASA, USA, this Institute was renamed as ‘Institute of Aerospace Medicine’. This Institute has been imparting training to medical officers from all the three Services for more than three decades and more than 120 Aviation Medicine specialists have passed out successfully. The specialty of Aerospace Medicine, has been accorded due recognition by the Medical Council of India and medical students training towards this end, are awarded a post graduate degree by the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, Bangalore. For study and research in this subject, students have had to rely on publications and journals from abroad. At present in India there is no textbook available in the market that addresses this subject in the required perspective. A limited number of books by foreign authors are available and that too not readily. Thus, for the general public, medical practitioners, and all those interested in the specialty of Aerospace Medicine, access to this knowledge is denied or difficult to acquire. The Indian Society of Aerospace Medicine recognized this need and under its aegis the project of producing a “Technical Mini Series” (TMS) has been initiated. The first aim of writing these “Technical Mini Series” is to provide an off the shelf ready-reckoner on the subject within easy reach of the service and civil medical officers, particularly those who are working in flying units. The aim is to present simple facts and the fundamentals of Aerospace Medicine in these mini series booklets, each booklet dealing with one particular aspect of Aerospace Medicine. The other aim is to present the subject in a format that is relevant to the Indian context and the work done by various Indian workers and research establishments, in this part of the world. In the preparation of these booklets, apart from the core technical content, experience of various contributors, with specific areas of expertise and their understanding and research on the subject has been incorporated. The Indian statistics and results are quoted at the appropriate places, and compared if necessary to Western/Eastern block figures, to give a clearer perspective of the broader scene. This booklet on Aviation Accident Pathology is the first of the booklets to be brought out in print and in due course more such booklets will find their way into reader’s hands. The Society would like to express its gratitude to the President of the Society, Air Marshal (Mrs) P Bandopadhyay AVSM, VSM Director General Medical Services (Air), Indian Air Force, for her continued encouragement, support and guidance behind this booklet. The Society would also like to thank the contributors for their contribution and for the long hours of hard work and dedication put in, to produce the booklet. The Society would also like to thank the Commandant, IAM, the Aviation Medicine specialists, and other office staff at IAM, who have contributed in numerous ways in bringing about this booklet.
The cost of this Publication is Rs.250/- or US $10 |
