No.2 Aero Medical Training Center
No.2 Aero Medical Training Center

No 2 Aero Medical Training Center (2 AMTC) is located at Air Force Academy, about 35 Km from the city of Hyderabad, Southern India. This Center is equipped to undertake indoctrination and evaluation of aircrew and research activity in related fields. Besides, it offers Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) facilities to the people of Hyderabad and neighboring districts.

Vision

A dedicated training and research center to look after anthropometric evaluation and aeromedical indoctrination of the young budding pilots of Indian Air Force.

Vision

Mission

The Mission of 2 AMTC is to empower the future pilots with adequate knowledge about the aviation stresses and preventive strategies. The Center must remain responsive to the aviation and training related problems and undertake requisite research to proffer professional advise.

Training Devices and Equipment

The Center has an Explosive Decompression Chamber. This has facility for physiological monitoring with an eight-channel Grass Polygraph. There is a Barany's Chair for simulating Coriolis sensation and symptoms of airsickness. This has dedicated digital physiological monitoring system. The Recompression Chamber is primarily utilized for hyperbaric oxygen therapy. A standard anthropometric platform for anthropometric assessment of aircrew is also available. The Center has a well-stocked reference library, including multimedia material, for the benefit of trainees and others.

Support Services

There are two aerospace physicians, supported by dedicated technical staff, including paramedics, to achieve the laid down objectives and assigned tasks of 2 AMTC.

AeromedicaL Training

Pilots' Courses
Aeromedical indoctrination of Flight Cadets undergoing pilot training at Air Force Academy. There are lectures in physiological stresses of aviation environment. Explosive Decompression Chamber (EDC) is utilized for practical demonstrations for hypoxia and rapid decompression.

AEROMEDICAL TRAINING

Air Traffic Controller (ATC) Officers Courses
Familiarisation of ATC officers into human factors and related aviation aspects.

Aviation Medicine Indoctrination Course for Civil Aircrew
A 5-day interactive learning programme, called as Aviation Safety Programme - The Human Element (ASP-HE) is available for the aircrew operating in the civil aviation sector. ASP-HE aims at imparting the knowledge and the understanding of the human elements of aviation to the aircrew. This includes Aviation and Occupational Medicine aspects of commercial airline operations; and a detailed study of Human Factors, including the vital Crew Resource Management (CRM). A proactive preventive approach is the point of emphasis during the programme.

Practical Demonstrations for Trainee Pilots
Practical demonstrations for hypoxia and rapid decompression for the trainee Officer Pilots of Army, Navy and all Helicopter Pilots.

Aeromedical Evaluation

Medical Evaluation Prior to Ab-initio Flying Training
Flight Cadets for pilot training at Air Force Academy undergo a thorough medical evaluation to ascertain their fitness prior to commencing basic flying training.

Aircrew Aircraft Compatibility
Flight Cadets for pilot training at Air Force Academy undergo anthropometric evaluation to determine selection for advanced flying training for fighter, transport or helicopter stream. Cockpit trials for selection for fighter stream for a borderline case is undertaken as per requirement.

Pressure Flying Clothing Measurement
All the trainee pilots selected for fighter stream undergo measurement for pressure clothing to prepare their sizing charts for use during high altitude flying.

Aeromedical Treatment

Airsickness
Airsickness is a familiar problem during ab-initio flying training. All the airsick flight cadets undergo an airsickess desensitization programme. This gound-based programme is a mix of yogic concepts with physical exercise schedule. The Center has had consistent success in alleviating the symptoms of airsickness of trainee pilots.

Aeromedical Treatment

Aero Medical Support to Air Force Academy
This Center is actively involved in medical cover at Air Force Academy. This includes investigation, analysis and advise for all the aeromedical problems of flying community.

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT)
HBOT in certain cases is life saving and in most cases reduces morbidity and may save limbs or life. This is an adjuvant therapy. HBOT is not conventionally utilized in clinical practice primarily due to non-availability of infrastructure viz. Rapid Recompression Chamber. 2 AMTC is one of three such Centers in the IAF. Since 1991 this Center has provided HBOT to the patients referred from Hospitals of twin cities of Hyderabad and Secundrabad. This has included serious emergencies like gas gangrene; moribund cases of severe trauma due to road traffic accident, persistent infection of bones (chronic osteomyelitis); poor healing of wounds among diabetics and vascular insufficiency in lower limbs and radiation necrosis; and partial recovery in cases of stroke (cerebro-vascular accident).
