In addition, there were three poster sessions on 08 and 09 Sep 08 covering a range of topics on selection and training of aircrew, Aviation Psychology and Clinical Aviation medicine. Wg Cdr HM Keshava Murthy presented a paper 'Effect of vibration stress on Heart Rate Variability' based on a study conducted at IAM, Bangalore. The paper discussed the effects of vibration stress on Autonomic Nervous System (ANS) using Heart Rate Variability (HRV) method in a simulated condition. The host Society arranged technical visit to Institute of Aviation Medicine, Royal Thai Air Force on 10 Sep 08. This was followed by static display of aircraft mainly used for air evacuation. ISAM Members at 79th Annual Scientific Meeting of the Aerospace Medical Association (AsMA) at Boston, Ma, USA: 11 To 16 May 2008 A three member official delegation consisting of Air Cmde RC Kashyap, Gp Capt KK Tripathi and Wg Cdr N Taneja attended the 79th Annual Scientific Meeting of Aerospace Medical Association at Boston, MA from 11 to 16 May 2008. Some of the important sessions attended by the ISAM delegation included Issues in Aviation Colour Vision Testing; LASIK and IOL in Aviation; Diabetes in Aviation; Casualty Evacuation; Ejection Seats, Escape and Safety; Space Medicine; Aviation Safety; Human Performance Optimization: Models and Methods; Human Factors Applied To Medicine There were four slide presentations made by the ISAM members. Gp Capt KK Tripathi had a presentation titled ‘Effects Of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy On Bone Healing In Surgical Defects Of Mandible’. Wg Cdr N Taneja made a slide presentation for a paper titled “Retrospective Analysis of Musculoskeletal disabilities in Military and Civil Aircrew”. Dr Sasirajan presented two papers titled “Coronary Artery Anomaly in Military Pilot: A Case Report” and “ Case of Pethidine induced Coronary Spasm in a Military Aviator”. Dr Sasirajan was short listed for the Young Investigators Award, indeed an honour since he was in the top 12 out of a total of 140 contestants. There were four workshops held concurrently on 11 May 08, a day prior to the official inauguration of the conference. These workshops on topics of current relevance in aviation, of five hours duration each, are conducted by eminent experts in their respective fields. The workshops were on “Aircrew Fatigue: Causes, Consequences and Countermeasures”, “Commercial Human Space Flight: The Next Challenge for Aerospace Medicine”, “Colour Vision and Colour Vision Testing” and “Journal Publishing”. The scientific exhibition during the meeting included about 26 stalls of medical/aviation equipments, publishers and ‘not for profit’ exhibitors/ military organisations.
