Air Marshal Dipankar Ganguly VSM & Bar
Air Marshal Dipankar Ganguly VSM & Bar was commissioned in the Army Medical Corps on 22 Mar 1973. He graduated from the Armed Forces Medical College with an excellent academic record and was the recipient of six gold medals, the ‘Kalinga Trophy’ and the President’s Gold Medal. He spent his initial years being posted to various field assignments including a three year deputation to the Sultanate of Oman. He specialized in General Surgery in 1981 from AFMC and subsequently completed specialisation in Cardio Thoracic Surgery in 1989 from Pune University, standing first in both exams. He also underwent special training in adult cardiac surgery and coronary artery bypass surgery at Royal Adelaide Hospital, Adelaide, South Australia. He was adjudged the best officer in the Medical Officers Basic Course and the Medical Officers Senior Command Course. Having completed his tenure as Classified Specialist in Cardio Thoracic Surgery at MH CTC Pune, he moved as Senior Adviser in Surgery and Cardio Thoracic Surgery and further, Consultant in his specialty at Army Hospital (R&R). As part of instructional duties, the Air Marshal has served as Clinical Tutor in Surgery and Cardio Thoracic Surgery, Lecturer, Reader and Associate Professor in Cardio Thoracic Surgery at AFMC and Professor of Cardio Thoracic Surgery at Army Hospital (R&R). The Air Marshal has pioneered and established the CTVS Centre at Army Hospital (R&R) and was responsible for starting CABG surgery in the Armed Forces. He took over as Deputy Commandant of the prestigious hospital and served in that capacity from Mar 06 to Feb 08. For his distinguished service at Army Hospital (R&R), he has been commended by the Chief of Army Staff and conferred with the ‘Vishisht Seva Medal’ twice. On completion of tenure at Army Hospital (R&R), he was posted as Commandant, Command Hospital (Northern Command) Udhampur and further as MG Med of Northern Command in June 09. On assumption of the rank of Lt Gen on 01 Aug 09, he was posted as DCIDS (Med) at the Integrated Defence Service HQ. He has now taken over as Director General Medical Services (Air) with effect from 01 Jun 10. |
