Other Facilities at IAM
Department of High Altitude Physiology
The Aircrew are indoctrinated in the Altitude or Decompression Chamber at various simulated altitudes on various aeromedical problems and on the proper use of oxygen and protective clothing. Conditions of Explosive Decompression are simulated in the Altitude Chamber for indoctrination and training.
Department of Hyperbaric Medicine
The Institute established the first Hyperbaric Medicine Center in India in 1967. It has a specially made chamber where the patients can be exposed to high pressures of oxygen in order to revive devitalised tissues. A number of lives and limbs have been saved where other modalities of treatment failed. Cases of gangrene, tetanus, necrotic ulcers, crush injuries etc., are successfully treated routinely. This facility is also extended to civilian patients. Topical HBO therapy is an innovation where 100% oxygen under marginally higher pressure is applied by means of a small fiber glass chamber, inside which the affected limb is placed.
Department of Applied Physics and Biodynamics
The department of Applied Physics and Biodynamics is actively engaged in applied research in the field of vibration, impact acceleration, heat stress, noise and vision related problems in aviation. The department has facilities for mechanical impedance studies of human subjects for determining properties of elasticity and damping. The department has also acquired human response vibration meter to study the vibration actually felt by human beings in a multimode vibration environment.
Department of Aviation Pathology
This department has three roles viz., Aviation Accident Pathology, Aviation Toxicology and Clinical Pathology. Each and every fatal aircraft accident in the Armed Forces is investigated in this department. Necessary expertise is extended to Civil Aviation also whenever called upon to assist in investigating civil aircraft accidents. The department also runs an exclusive course in Aviation Accident Pathology for pathologists. A facility to differentiate between avian and human blood has also been set up, to aid in investigations of bird-hits to aircrafts.
