Aeromedical Evaluation

Aeromedical evaluation of Armed Forces and Civil Aircrew personnel, is one of the important functions of IAM. The aeromedical evaluation is primarily divided into two areas:

  • aircrew personnel both military and civil
  • life support systems

The Institute has been recognized by both NASA as well as the Russian Space Authorities for Medical Evaluation of Astronauts and Cosmonauts.

Aeromedical Evaluation of Aircrew
Aircrew are put through a series of thorough tests in the Institute prior to their commissioning. In addition certain specific disabilities, such as loss of consciousness in the air, head injuries, orthopaedic disabilities, ejection injuries, air sickness, cardiovascular disabilities etc. are evaluated at the Institute. The Institute also carries out initial and renewal medical evaluation of civil aircrew. Aeromedical simulators are used for realistic evaluation under simulated condition of flight. The Institute has many such facilities.

The Acceleration and Vestibular Physiology has a Human Centrifuge where the aircrew are indoctrinated by exposure to G forces. The centrifuge is also used for evaluating cases of cardiovascular disablity and low G tolerance among aircrew besides evaluating different types of Anti-G suits.

The SD Simulator (DISO) A new state of the art SD simulator was installed in the Institute in May 2004. This SD simulator is being used to impart highly realistic SD training to the aircrew. Aircrew who have undergone training on this simulator since May 04, have been extremely satisfied with this simulator. It will also be used for motion sickness desensitization program. One trainee cadet was successfully desensitized on this simulator.
